In hotel rooms and offices, one thing determines the right minibar: the noise level. A buzzing fridge next to the bed costs guests their sleep – and you the good review. This guide explains the difference between absorption cooling and compressor, what the EU noise classes mean, and what to watch out for when buying.

Absorption Cooling or Compressor?

Both technologies cool reliably – but they differ fundamentally in noise, energy consumption, and cooling performance:

In short: Wherever people sleep or work concentrated, absorption cooling is the right choice. Where volume and efficiency matter and noise is no issue, the compressor plays to its strengths – for example as a beverage cooler in the breakfast room.

Why Noise Level Is So Important

A quiet hotel room measures about 25–30 dB at night – even a quiet compressor hum of 35 dB is clearly noticeable then. The EU noise emission classes (on the energy label of every cooling unit, EU 2019/2016) provide orientation:

For hotel rooms and offices we recommend only noise class A. Absorption units always achieve this class by design – they simply don’t have a motor that can make noise. All minibars at Gastro-Nik use absorption cooling of class A.

What to Look for When Buying

  • Volume: 25–30 litres suffice for drinks + snacks in single rooms, 40 litres for suites or offices with multiple users
  • Solid door or glass door: Glass doors display contents (proven to increase sales in hotels), solid doors cool slightly lower – glass door models typically +5 to +14 °C, solid door models 0 to +10 °C
  • Lockability: standard in hotels, sensible for offices – all our models are lockable
  • Built-in or freestanding: for furniture installation, pay attention to overlay hinges and ventilation openings (e.g. Bartscher K1-111 with installation kit)
  • Ambient temperature: Absorbers dislike heat – above approx. 32 °C room temperature, cooling performance drops noticeably; do not place next to heaters or in direct sunlight
  • Power consumption: the price of silence – absorbers usually are efficiency class G (approx. 190–250 kWh/year); with 20 rooms, comparing annual consumption pays off

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an absorption minibar really silent?

Practically yes. Cooling works without a motor and without moving parts – there is nothing that could hum or vibrate. That is why absorbers have been the standard in hotel rooms for decades.

Why not just a small compressor fridge?

A compressor cycles on and off – especially the start-up at night wakes sensitive sleepers. In sleeping and work areas, silent absorption technology is the safe choice; compressor units belong in rooms where noise is not disturbing.

How cold does an absorption minibar get?

Solid door models reach approx. 0 to +10 °C, glass door models approx. +5 to +14 °C – ideal for drinks, snacks, and fruit. Minibars are not intended for freezing or perishable foods.

What about thermoelectric minibars?

Thermoelectric devices (Peltier technology) are inexpensive but cool only a few degrees below room temperature and have a constantly running fan. We do not recommend them for professional hotel use.

Does absorption cooling consume a lot of electricity?

It consumes more than a compressor unit of the same size – that is the trade-off for silence. With about 0.05 kW power consumption, the costs per unit are still manageable.
