What starts as a thin grey film turns into a thick crust on the heating element, increasing energy consumption, distorting the taste and ultimately causing equipment failure. Descaling is quick, inexpensive and manageable. We show you how to identify limescale buildup, descale properly and the intervals that have proven effective in practice.

Why Limescale is the Number One Killer of Appliances
When heating water, dissolved limescale precipitates and settles preferentially where it’s hottest: on heating elements, boilers and instantaneous water heaters. Even a one millimetre limescale layer acts as insulation and can noticeably increase energy consumption – the heating element has to get hotter to reach the same water temperature and overheats in the long run. Additionally, limescale deposits narrow pipes and valves, brewing times are extended, flow rates drop. In coffee machines, taste is also affected: limescale alters extraction and makes even the best coffee flat and bitter.
Signs Indicating Limescale Build-Up
- The machine takes significantly longer to heat up or brew than before.
- White or grey deposits on the spout, nozzles or in the water tank.
- Louder operating noises, banging or hissing during heating.
- Reduced flow, dripping instead of flowing spout.
- Coffee tastes flat, bitter or changes despite the same beans.
- Limescale particles or flakes in the hot water.

Determining Water Hardness: Half the Battle
How quickly an appliance calcifies depends directly on water hardness. You can find out free of charge from your water supplier or within seconds using test strips. As a rule of thumb: water with about 14 °dH is considered hard, from 21 °dH very hard. For hard water, a filter cartridge or water softener is additionally worthwhile for high-quality coffee machines – it significantly extends descaling intervals and protects the boiler long-term. However, it cannot completely replace descaling.
Step-by-Step Proper Descaling
- Prepare: Switch off the appliance and let it cool down; remove coffee residues and filters. Check manufacturer instructions for descaling.

- Run through: Pour solution into the water tank and start a brewing programme or descaling mode, depending on the appliance. For heavy limescale, let the solution act inside the appliance for 15–30 minutes.

- Rinse thoroughly: Run at least two to three full tank fillings with clear water until no descaler residues remain in the system.
- Visual inspection: Check nozzles, spout and tank; wipe off external limescale spots – done.
Correct Intervals
Manufacturer instructions are always binding – as a practical reference value for devices in daily catering use:
- Soft water (under 8 °dH): about every 2–3 months.
- Medium water (8–14 °dH): about every 4–6 weeks.
- Hard water (above 14 °dH): every 2–4 weeks or use a water filter.

- Descaling with vinegar or vinegar essence: damages seals and aluminium, leaves taste.

- Installing a water filter and then never descaling again – filters reduce limescale but do not eliminate it.
- Descaling hot appliances – risk of splashing and aggressive fumes.
