Fans & Exhaust Boxes

The hood collects, the fan moves. Motorless hoods therefore require a device in the exhaust duct or on the roof that directs the air outside. Which one depends on two figures: the air volume in cubic metres per hour and the resistance that the duct, bends and filters present to the airflow.

The three types

  • Roof fan: sits on the roof, blows vertically outwards. The noise remains outside the building, there is negative pressure in the duct – odours cannot escape anywhere.
  • Fan box: inserted into the duct, usually in the ceiling void. A good choice if the roof is not an option or the path upwards is too long.
  • Exhaust box: compact unit for smaller systems, often with speed controller and soundproof housing.

What counts in design

  • Air volume: It comes from calculation according to VDI 2052 and is based on the appliances under the hood.
  • Duct cross-section: A too narrow duct forces the fan into a range where it becomes loud and delivers little air.
  • Control: A speed controller reduces consumption and noise outside peak times.
  • Run-on time: Let the device run for a few minutes after closing – this dries the duct and prevents odours.

Suitable hoods can be found under Ceiling Hoods, Box Hoods and Wall Hoods. For design purposes, a list of appliances is sufficient – please send it to us.
