GN Containers for the Professional Kitchen

GN containers – short for Gastronorm – are the standardized container system in the catering industry. Because the outer dimensions are defined by DIN EN 631, the same container fits in refrigerator, combi steamer, bain-marie, and serving counter. We offer the complete range from GN 2/1 to GN 1/9, in stainless steel and plastic, plus matching lids and racks and inserts.

Which Size Do You Need?

The base size is GN 1/1 with 530 × 325 mm. All other sizes divide this area: Two GN 1/2 fill one GN 1/1, three GN 1/3 likewise, and so on up to GN 1/9 for dips and spices. GN 2/1 with 650 × 530 mm is the commercial kitchen format and fits in rack ovens. All dimensions with volume specifications are detailed in our guide GN Container Dimensions & Sizes.

Stainless Steel or Plastic?

  • Stainless steel withstands heat and is used wherever food is cooked, regenerated or kept warm – that means in combi steamers and bain-marie.
  • Plastic is lighter, cheaper and mostly transparent. Its strength is in cool storage and warehousing, where the contents need to be visible. It is not intended for hot applications.

The Right Depth

Common depths are 20, 40, 65, 100, 150 and 200 mm. A GN 1/1 with 65 mm holds around 5.5 litres and is the all-purpose depth; for soups and stews choose 150 or 200 mm. Shallow containers with 20 mm are suitable for cold cuts and side dishes at the serving counter. Remember lids: They protect against drying out and are mandatory during transport.
